Kathleen Whalen joined Afterschool Partnership in 2009 as Director of Professional Development. She is responsible for providing training, curriculum support and professional development for out-of school time staff, youth development workers and community partners. The thirty-year veteran of New Orleans Public Schools is a former teacher and social worker. The former New Orleans Public School Liaison to Juvenile Court also worked as the Save the Children Psychosocial Program Manager for Katrina Response and the Domestic Emergencies Unit immediately after Hurricane Katrina. Kathleen was instrumental in developing resiliency building curriculum for children in grades K-8, a stress management/resiliency building curriculum for teachers and childcare staff and a disaster preparedness program. Kathleen works closely with the Tulane University School of Social Work as a field supervisor and adjunct professor. She is a founding board member of Youth Empowerment Project, a board member of lowernine.org and on the advisory board of the Greater Gentilly High School. She has a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of New Orleans and a Masters of Social Work from Tulane University
